Prevent duty

Prevent is about safeguarding people and communities from the threat of terrorism. It forms part of the government’s counter‑terrorism strategy and aims to stop people from being radicalised or drawn into extremism.

Buttercups Training takes its Prevent responsibilities seriously and works to create a safe, inclusive learning environment for all learners.

Two people meeting

What Prevent means for you as a learner

Prevent is not about monitoring everyday opinions or beliefs. It is about:

  • Keeping people safe

  • Encouraging open discussion and critical thinking

  • Making sure learners know where to get help if something does not feel right

Everyone has a role to play in staying safe and supporting others.

What Buttercups Training does

We work actively to support learners and meet our Prevent duty by:

  • Training all staff on Prevent so they understand the signs of radicalisation and extremism and know what to do if they have concerns

  • Promoting British Values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance

  • Taking all concerns seriously and working with the police and other agencies where necessary

  • Providing access to our Safeguarding and Welfare Team for advice and support

  • Reviewing learner welfare regularly, including telephone reviews and welfare visits for learners aged 16 to 19

  • Sharing advice and guidance through our Stay Safe resources, including links to national support organisations

What you can do to stay safe

As a learner, you are encouraged to:

  • Talk to someone if you are worried that you may be being influenced or radicalised

  • Speak up if you are concerned about someone else

  • Contact the Safeguarding and Welfare Team at Buttercups if you have any concerns

  • Learn about British Values and the risks associated with extremism and radicalisation

  • Avoid situations that feel unsafe, especially with people you do not know

  • Remember that people online and on social media are not always who they claim to be

  • Use the internet and social media safely and report content linked to radical or extremist views

Staying safe during a firearms or weapons attack

This video explains how the police and partner organisations work to keep people safe from the risk of gun and weapons attacks in the UK.

Although these incidents are extremely rare, the video focuses on simple actions people can take to stay safe if they hear gunshots or find themselves caught up in a dangerous situation in public or at work.

It encourages awareness, calm decision‑making, and knowing how to respond to protect yourself and others.

A final message

Buttercups Training is committed to supporting learners and creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels safe. If you ever feel unsure or worried, it is always better to share a concern than to deal with it on your own.

Support is available.
