Course overview
Delivery drivers play a vital role in supporting people who are unable to visit the pharmacy, ensuring they receive the same clear and accurate information about their medicines as they would at the counter.
Accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), our Support Staff Course for Pharmacy Delivery Drivers equips you with the knowledge to provide the best possible experience for patients, covering customer service, teamwork, health and safety, and effective medicine transport and drop off.
Who is the course for?
This course is for drivers who deliver medicines from a community pharmacy to patients’ homes and have the support of their employer to undertake the course. You will require a pharmacist or pharmacy technician to act as your workplace training supervisor during the course.
How the course is delivered
All our courses are delivered by blended learning, via the b-Hive system. The course comprises three modules, end-of-module quizzes to assess knowledge, Virtual PharmacyTM scenarios to assess competence, activity books, witness testimonies and Final Tests administered under exam conditions.
You will be supported throughout your course by a dedicated Buttercups tutor and your workplace training supervisor.

Course structure
Working in a Pharmacy Environment
Covers the key responsibilities regading health and safety, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safeguarding the public. You will also understand the roles of the wider team and the importance of teamwork, and be introduced to effective communication and customer service. You will cover the SOPs specific to delivery drivers, and considerations for lone working in order to stay safe.
Teamwork and Person-Centred Care
You will understand the roles of the pharmacy team, including the wider multidisciplinary team, and the importance of teamwork, and be introduced to effective communication and customer service. You will be introduced to the concept of person-centred care and the communication skills required to deliver high-quality support to patients.
Medicines and Prescriptions
This module introduces the laws and regulations related to medicines, including controlled drugs, which affect daily practice. You will cover the SOPs specific to delivery drivers, safe handling and delivery of medicines, including the appropriate storage requirements of medicines in transit to maintain their stability.
You will understand how to communicate with patients effectively, recognise the limitations of your role, the importance of referring queries back to the pharmacy team and considerations for lone working in order to stay safe.
