Level 6 Enhanced Clinical Practitioner Apprenticeship Now Open to Registered Nurses

Buttercups Training are excited to announce that our Level 6 Enhanced Clinical Practitioner (ECP) Apprenticeship is now officially available to registered nurses, offering a new progression pathway for those looking to enhance their clinical capabilities and expand their professional scope of practice.

This development comes at a pivotal time for the wider healthcare sector, where the demand for highly skilled, autonomous clinicians continues to rise across acute, primary and community settings.

Flexible Training for Registered Nurses

The Enhanced Clinical Practitioner apprenticeship is designed for healthcare professionals working in clinical environments who are ready to take their practice to the next level. Nurses undertaking the programme will develop enhanced skills in assessment, diagnostics, decision making, intervention and leadership, all while continuing to work in their current clinical role.

Learners can complete the apprenticeship entirely from their workplace, with no travel or day release required, making the programme highly accessible for busy clinical teams. Our flexible, fully remote model enables employers can operate effectively whilst making sure learners still have engaging and direct access to our teachings and offering.

Nursing Pathway Now Available

The nursing pathway is specifically designed to reflect the realities and responsibilities of modern nursing practice. It enables registered nurses to apply enhanced clinical thinking directly to their own patient population and service context.

The nursing pathway includes the following key areas of study at an enhanced level of practice:

  • Focused assessment and pattern recognition, supporting earlier identification of deterioration and clinical risk
  • Pathophysiology driven reasoning, enabling nurses to link symptoms, disease processes and patient history with confidence
  • Justified diagnostic ordering, ensuring appropriate use of diagnostics within scope and governance frameworks
  • Boundary recognition, supporting safe autonomous practice while understanding escalation thresholds
  • Effective referral and care navigation, strengthening multidisciplinary collaboration and continuity of care

These components allow nurses to develop their clinical expertise in areas that are highly relevant to their role and service needs, ensuring learning is directly transferable to practice. They support nurses in building confidence, strengthening decision making, and delivering high quality, evidence based care. This is an excellent opportunity for nurses as they seek to enhance their clinical skills, progress professionally, and respond effectively to the evolving demands of healthcare services, while also adding value to their teams and improving patient outcomes.

Strengthening Clinical Leadership Across Healthcare

The Level 6 programme is built around ten core duties drawn from the Enhanced Clinical Practitioner apprenticeship standard. These duties ensure learners develop the skills required to:

  • Deliver complex, evidence based clinical care
  • Conduct holistic assessments and enhanced diagnostics
  • Lead and support multidisciplinary teams
  • Innovate and improve clinical practice
  • Contribute to service planning and development
  • Develop and mentor colleagues

Through these duties, registered nurses are supported to take on enhanced clinical and leadership responsibilities, contributing not only to individual patient care but also to service development and improvement.

This apprenticeship supports nurses to practise with greater autonomy, confidence and capability, empowering them to take on enhanced roles within their teams. For employers, the programme supports workforce capability, retention and service resilience, while aligning with national priorities for enhanced clinical practice.
